In Bitcoin 101, we ended on a simple but radical idea: if you own your keys, no one can freeze your wealth or quietly inflate it away. But that sentence hides the question that stops many Canadians before they ever start: what does "owning your keys" actually mean, and what happens if I lose them?
This guide answers both. It walks through self-custody (holding your own Bitcoin) using Liana, a free, open-source wallet built specifically to remove the scariest part of going it alone: losing access to your own money.
Why Bitcoin-only? Liana is a Bitcoin-only wallet by design. Wallets that also support hundreds of altcoins (like Trezor and Ledger) carry far more code and far more ways to lose funds, from blind-signing smart-contract transactions to supply-chain hacks. 1. Self-Custody: Actually Holding Your Bitcoin
When you buy Bitcoin on an exchange and leave it there, you don't really hold Bitcoin. You hold an IOU. The exchange holds the keys, and you're trusting them not to freeze your account, get hacked, or go under. Canadians learned this the hard way with QuadrigaCX, where roughly $190 million CAD vanished when the founder died holding the only keys, and again when FTX collapsed in 2022.
Self-custody means you hold the keys: a secret recovery phrase (a list of words), ideally protected by a signing device. No company sits between you and your money. As the saying goes: not your keys, not your coins.
2. The Single Point of Failure
Traditional self-custody hands you a single 12- or 24-word recovery phrase (a "seed"). That phrase is your money. And there's the catch:
- Lose it through fire, flood, a misplaced note, or a faulty memory, and your Bitcoin is gone forever. There is no "forgot password" button.
- Someone finds it and they can take everything, instantly and irreversibly.
That all-or-nothing weight is real, and it's exactly why so many people leave their coins on an exchange despite the risks. Liana was built to fix this.
3. What Makes Liana Different: Recovery Paths
Liana is made by Wizardsardine, a Bitcoin security company. It's free, open-source, runs on desktop and mobile, and, most importantly, it lets your wallet have spending rules that change over time, written directly into Bitcoin itself (a technology called Miniscript).
Here's the idea in plain English:
- Day to day, your primary key controls your Bitcoin, just like any wallet.
- You also set up a recovery key that only becomes usable after a waiting period you choose, say three or six months of the coins sitting untouched.
- As long as you stay active (Liana reminds you to periodically "refresh" your coins, which resets the timer), the recovery path stays dormant.
- If you ever lose your primary key, you simply wait out the timelock and recover everything with your backup key.
The result: no single point of failure. One lost key no longer means lost coins. And because these rules are enforced by the Bitcoin network rather than by Wizardsardine, your recovery plan keeps working even if the company disappears tomorrow.
4. Passing Bitcoin On: A Built-In Inheritance Plan
The same mechanism solves a problem most people never plan for: what happens to your Bitcoin when you're gone? Bitcoin lost to death is lost permanently. There's no bank to call and no estate office that can recover it.
With Liana, you can give a recovery key (or sealed instructions for one) to a family member, a trusted friend, or an estate lawyer. While you're alive and active, only you can spend. The recovery clock keeps resetting, so your heirs can't touch it. But if your wallet goes untouched for the full timelock period, your chosen person can recover the funds.
You never have to hand over control while you're alive, and you never have to trust a custodian. It turns "I hope my family can find and figure out my seed phrase" into an enforceable plan.

5. Is Liana Right for You?
Liana shines for anyone who wants resilient, long-term self-custody or an inheritance plan: savings you intend to hold and protect for years. It's self-custodial, free, and open-source, with reproducible builds and signed releases.
It's also a little more involved than a basic tap-to-pay mobile wallet, and it works best with a signing device and (ideally) your own Bitcoin node. If you're brand new, make sure you're comfortable with the ideas in Bitcoin 101 first, then treat this as leveling up into serious self-custody.
6. What You'll Need
- A computer or phone to run Liana (desktop or mobile).
- At least one (ideally two) signing devices, so your primary and recovery keys live on separate devices kept in separate places.
- A metal backup plate for your recovery words (paper survives neither fire nor flood).
- Optional but recommended: your own Bitcoin node, for maximum privacy. Liana's community edition connects to your node.
- Pen, paper, and a little patience.
7. Choosing a Signing Device
First, a word about names. These devices are usually sold as "hardware wallets," but the name misleads. Your Bitcoin never sits inside the device; the coins live on the Bitcoin network, at addresses your keys control. Liana is the wallet: it watches your balance and builds your transactions. The device's real job is to keep your keys offline and sign, so we call it what it is: a signing device. Liana supports any signing device that implements Miniscript.
Our recommendation: build your own. Specter DIY and Krux are air-gapped, Miniscript-capable signers you assemble yourself from generic electronics. A build costs less than a commercial device, nothing in the package says Bitcoin (so there is no branded shipment to intercept and no vendor customer list with your address on it), you verify the firmware yourself before flashing, and you finish the build actually understanding the thing that guards your savings. Bring the parts to a meetup and build alongside someone who has done it.

A note for DIY fans: SeedSigner is a popular open-source, air-gapped signer, but it does not yet support Miniscript, so it can't be used with Liana's recovery setups for now.
Buying ready-made? Buy direct. Always purchase from the manufacturer, never from a third-party marketplace or used. A tampered device can quietly steal your funds. (DIY builds sidestep the problem: the parts are generic, and nobody tampers with a shipment they cannot identify.)
8. Setting Up Liana (The High-Level Path)
This is the shape of the process. For the exact click-by-click, follow Liana's own up-to-date guides, linked at the bottom.
- Download from the official source only: the Liana releases page on GitHub.
- Verify the download. Liana publishes signed binaries with reproducible builds. Check the signature and checksum before you install (more below).
- Create your keys on your signing device(s), and write the recovery words on paper, then metal. Never as a digital file, screenshot, or photo.
- Configure your recovery setup: a primary key, a recovery key, and a timelock. Pick a timelock long enough that you'll never trip it by accident (several months) but short enough that recovery isn't painful.
- Back up your wallet descriptor alongside every seed backup (this is the big one; see the warning below).
- Receive a small test amount first, and verify the receive address on your signing device's own screen before sending anything.
- Do a recovery dry run before trusting it with serious money. Practice with a tiny amount so you know the recovery actually works.
⚠️ Back up your descriptor, not just your seed. A Liana wallet cannot be restored from your recovery words alone. You also need the wallet descriptor, the policy that ties your keys and timelock together. Store a copy of it with each seed backup. Without it, recovery becomes extremely difficult. This trips people up, so don't skip it.
9. The Golden Rules of Self-Custody
- Your recovery words are the keys. Never type them into a website, an app, or a "support agent" chat. No legitimate person or wallet will ever ask for them.
- Keep them offline. No photos, no cloud storage, no password managers, no email. Metal backup, stored privately.
- Verify addresses on the device. Always confirm a receive address on your signing device's own screen. Malware can swap what you see on your computer.
- Start small. Move meaningful funds only after a full backup-and-recovery dry run.
- Beware impersonators. Scammers pose as wallet "support" on Telegram, X, and Discord. Limestone City Bitcoin will never DM you first or ask for your recovery phrase.
